  • Autumn Term 1: Visit to Hewitt’s Farm

Thu 25 Mar 2021 Kira Lye

This term the Nest class have been learning through the topic Sow, Grow, Farm. To enhance their learning we visited Hewitt’s Farm in Orpington in which the children were able observe the seasonal produce grown in UK farms, complete a map by using a key, and see first-hand where the journey of their food begins. The children also had the opportunity to pick their own fruit and vegetables to bring back to school and eat as part of planning a healthy, balanced meal. In art lessons, the children have been learning about Yayoi Kusama as part of their contemporary artist study. They chose their own pumpkin from the farm which they brought back to school to use as the base for their final 3D piece. Upon completing and photographing their art, they were allowed to clean their pumpkin and carve it in time for Halloween.

  • Anti-Bullying Week

Thu 25 Mar 2021 Kira Lye

The theme for Anti-Bullying Week 2020 was: United Against Bullying. Anti-Bullying Week took place on Monday 16th - Friday 20th November. Odd Socks Day marked the first day of Anti-Bullying Week. Primary children and staff were invited to wear odd socks to school to highlight that we are all unique. In class we watched TV star Andy Day and his band Andy and the Odd Socks perform their amazing charity song: The Kids United. In secondary, the pupils focussed on anti-bullying during their tutor time and PSHE lessons. Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well in to adulthood. This year, more than ever, we’ve witnessed the positive power that society can have when we come together to tackle a common challenge. Anti-Bullying Week is no different. Bullying has a long lasting effect on those who experience and witness it. But by channelling our collective power, through shared efforts and shared ambitions, we can reduce bullying together. From parents and carers, to teachers and politicians, to children and young people, we all have our part to play in coming together to make a difference. We are all a piece in the puzzle, and together, we are united against bullying.

  • World Book Day 2021

    Mon 08 Mar 2021 Kathy Tomlinson-Cole

New Woodlands School (secondary) embraced World Book Day with joy, despite the limitations of the COVID-19 lockdown!

We spent the day discussing our favourite books and sharing recommendations.

All students wrote a ‘sales pitch review’ to promote their favourite books to their peers.

Classes engaged in quiet reading, group reading and even listening to audio literature.

We also spent time looking at New Woodlands Virtual Book Fair where we were able to browse for our next read and to decided what to spend our World Book Day vouchers on. We hope next year to be back to normal so that we can all once again dress up!
