As part of our class experiences, Mandela class had an afternoon where we did a blindfold taste test. We had a variety of foods, both sweet and savoury, to try and the children were very good at guessing what they were tasting. In fact, they enjoyed it so much that they insisted that our class TAs and Kerry also participated.
Following a very tense week where all children have participated in the Table Tennis competition we had the final this Friday. It was a close game between Liam and Brandon, but Liam managed to just win with some great shots. Staff final was Con versus Kenny with Con just managing to scrap the win.
Good audience participation and support. Well done all
Lewisham Music specialist rap tutor Yasmine, provided a workshop for KS3 and KS4 which enabled all students to explore the art form of rap across a range of sub-genres (Hip-Hop, Grime, Trap). Through lyricism, the students were able to link their work with creative literacy and personal expression.
Nurture have been learning about Judaism in R.E. In class we have learnt about how and where Judaism was founded. We learnt and retold the story of God visiting Moses and promising him a son. We then went to visit our local synagogue and met Mr Rose who gave us a tour of the Jewish place of worship and taught us about us all about the different things that we saw including the Torah (Jewish holy script), Ark, yad, tallit and star of David. We had to wear a Kippah on our head as sign of respect. We saw the ten commandments written in Hebrew which is a language used by Jewish people.
For our experience afternoon, we dressed up as superheroes and had to use a sketch map to help us locate the stolen treasure from the evil witch. She had hidden it all over our garden but we used our map reading skills to locate her hiding places and retrieve all the stolen goods.
Halloween
As it was nearly Halloween, we each got a pumpkin, which we had to design and scoop out. We also worked as a team to make a disgusting mud pie (delicious chocolate cake).
History
Our topic this term has been Ancient Benin Kingdom. We have learnt lots in class about the history of what is now called Nigeria, a country in West Africa. We have explored how the kingdom was formed, their way of life, their beliefs and their art. At the museum, we were able to closely observe artefacts from a civilization dating back over 1000 years.
Science
In science we have been learning about living things and classifying different animals. We had to look and find examples of animals from different groups including mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates.
Art
In art we have been exploring Ancient Benin art including the Benin bronzes and fabric. At the museum we were able to see Ancient Benin artefacts which we sketched into our Art books. We also saw examples of some fabrics made in Nigeria and observed the different patterns
Music
Whilst we were at the museum we explored the instrument exhibition and was able to use the interactive tables to select and listen to a range of different instruments.
We have celebrated two birthdays this term in Nurture: DeJuan’s 10th Birthday and Archie’s 9th Birthday. We enjoy sitting around the table and singing Happy Birthday before watching our friends make a wish before blowing out their candles. We love sharing the cake!
We have also taken part in several other experiences this term:
This year’s Anti-Bullying Week ran from Monday 15th November to Friday 19th November and the theme was “One Kind Word.” We used resources from the anti-bullying alliance to deliver an assembly to introduce this year’s message:
“In a world that can sometimes feel like it’s filled with negativity, one kind word can provide a moment of hope. It can be a turning point. It can change someone’s perspective. It can change their day. It can change the course of a conversation and break the cycle of bullying. Best of all, one kind word leads to another. Kindness fuels kindness. So from the playground to Parliament, and from our phones to our homes, together, our actions can fire a chain reaction that powers positivity. It starts with one kind word. It starts today.” (Anti-bullying Alliance)
After this, all students chose one kind word, which they wrote onto an inflated balloon which we then used to make a display in the reception area. Each day that week, students were greeted by an arch of kind words to start their day positively.
Throughout the week we took part in a range of lessons planned by the anti-bullying alliance. We then acted as anti-bullying agony aunts and responded in role to people who found themselves in a range of bullying scenarios.
Blindfold taste test
Yummy! Zephaniah tried a blindfold taste test, we covered our eyes and had to guess which biscuit was which. We both got them correct! What is your favourite biscuit?
Make model
Look at our model rockets! We used cardboard boxes, paper cups, masking tape and paint to create rockets.
Cook a meal
Learning to cook is an important life skill. Watch us in the kitchen. We made sure we used the right measurements and cleaned our cooking tools, would you like to taste?
Looking after a pet
We looked after Cinnamon for an afternoon, She’s really cute and friendly but be very careful because if you don’t pay attention she’ll hop away!
Reading a timetable/map
We used a map to find out where Islam was started for RE. Islam was found in Saudi Arabia, can you find it on a map? We can!
Performing in a production
India Leigh performed in New Woodlands adaptation of Sleeping beauty, she enjoyed her performance really well and was an awesome fairy.
Public speaking
We’re not shy, we enjoy speaking in public. We are proud of our work and we are happy to share with our peers and in public.
