Congratulations to all of those who took part in the careers interview last Friday ( 26/1/24) with Dr Jamie Maddock from Quilter Associates. The morning was spent going over CV’s and employment skills. Dr Maddock was very impressed with New Woodlands School and the careers provision. He looks forward to coming in again next year. A special mention goes out to Hannarly Wilmot (above) in LH. Hannarly was certainly the best dressed and spoke very eloquently about his ambitions once he leaves school.
Mandela Class had the opportunity to travel to London to visit the Science Museum with Ms. Jean-Paen. Spread across seven different zones, the class had the opportunity to interact with real scientific phenomena in the Wonder Lab. We saw lightning strike before our eyes, experience how sound waves create a disturbance in water and how thermal imaging cameras work.
Around the rest of the museum we saw old airplanes like Spitfires, space rockets and re-entry pods and sculptures and vintage cars among other interesting inventions.
On Wednesday 13th December, The Nest visited the Tower of London to consolidate their learning in History. Their topic for the Autumn Term was The Battle of Hastings. The original Tower of London was built by the Normans following the invasion led by William the Conqueror. The children were able to see how the Tower has been used through history as a fortress, a prison and a palace and how it has changed through time to suit its purpose.
Here, we saw a painting of what the original Tower looked like when it was first being built by the Normans. We also saw some of the original Norman features including the foundations and a fireplace. It was interesting to see the wooden mask of William the Conqueror and also the armour that he would have worn.
We saw lots of other interesting things including the Ravens which live at the tower.
We saw The Crown Jewels (but we weren’t allowed to take photos of them), the guards and lots of weapons. We also learnt about the different animals which were kept at the tower including a polar bear! Ryan even sat on an old toilet which was just a hole in the wall.
As part of our literacy and history, the year 7 classes visited the Chislehurst Caves, which were carved out over hundreds of years. The caves were dug for chalk used in lime burning and brick making for the Building of London, as well as for flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago.
First open to the public in 1900 as a showplace, the guides told the Victorians history of Romans, Druids and Saxons and Smuggling. During WW1, it was used as munitions storage for the Woolwich Arsenal.
With the outbreak of WW2, the caves became an underground town and the largest deep air-raid shelter outside London, protecting over 15000 people every night during the Blitz.
In Owens class we played a mathematical board game from Somalia called Pumpkin Patch.
The pupils once they had learnt how to play it scored the game 10/10!!!!!
Zephaniah Class went to the incredible London Zoo! The trip was part of our English Curriculum as we were reading the story book ‘The Bear and the Piano’.
The children absolutely loved their experience at the Zoo. They saw various animals including Penguins, Tigers, Gorillas, Giraffes and Parrots!
The day was fun filled and the class thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
KS3 visited Lewisham Music Club to learn about Music Tech and production.
JG went to Lewisham music hub and walked through the park. They have really benefited from having previous sessions and are now able to be much more independent when making and sharing their music. Thank you to Joy who taught us how to use Logic Pro today at the hub.
G, year 7:
‘We went to Lewisham Music and learned how to use Logic and made beat. We were singing and rapping and then on the way back to school, we had a race to get an ice-cream.
To be fair, it was a great day.
A year 7:
Last Thursday we went to Lewisham Music. We made great beats on Logic. Some people could rap to their beats, which was amazing.
I hope we can visit there again.
A Year 9 pupil won the Jack Petchy Award & treated his class to the cinema! The rest of the money was used to buy art equipment for our school.
JG went to Borough Market to see and smell all the exotic fruits around the world! They also had fun relaxing by the River Thames

The year 7 classes recently visited the Imperial War Museum in London.
The children wandered through the museum and looked at preserved artefacts, photographs, and heard stories from survivors, gaining a true sense of what it was like to be involved in and live through wartime.
museum’s vast collections encompassed a wealth of objects – from uniforms to photographs, vehicles to films, weapons to works of art – each with a story to tell.
